The lemon sharks ( Negaprion ) are up to 3 meters wide, yellowish brown, strong sharks, their second dorsal fin, in contrast to most other sharks, almost the same size as the first dorsal fin. The animals have large eyes with a snout that is shorter than the width of the mouth.

Species

The genus of the lemon sharks of two types:

  • The Sicklefin lemon ( Negaprion acutidens ), also known as the Pacific lemon shark, differs from its relatives by the clear crescent-shaped dorsal fins, pectoral and ventral fins.
  • The lemon shark ( Negaprion brevirostris ), also called Atlantic lemon, differs from its relatives by its white belly.

Reproduction

Both species are viviparous and have developed from the yolk sac placenta. After a pregnancy 10-12 months large young are born up to 14, between 50 and 70 cm.

Both species are considered to be potentially dangerous for people.
