Nekyia

Nekyia refers to the myth, according to a deity, a Heroe or a person descends into the world of the dead to get there information about the future or to break the power of death.

The name goes back to the 11 of the Odyssey, in which Odysseus lingers towards the end of his wanderings in Hades. More Hades visitors are the heroes Theseus, Hercules and Aeneas, the mortal Orpheus and Alcestis.

Occurrence in literary works

  • Faust's transition to the mothers and the Classical Walpurgis Night ( Faust II ) allude to the Nekyia myth.
  • In The Magic Mountain Thomas Mann paraphrased with Hans Castorp's dream the snow Nekyia myth.
