Nelson I. Norton

Nelson Ira Norton (* March 30, 1820 in Cattaraugus County, New York, † October 28, 1887 in Hinsdale, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Nelson Norton received only a limited education and worked in agriculture. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In 1860 and 1865-1867, he was District in Cattaraugus County. From 1852 to 1870 he served as justice of the peace in his home; in the years 1861 and 1862 he sat as an MP in the New York State Assembly.

After the death of elected Congressman Augustus F. Allen, who already died on 20 January 1875, and thus before the legislature on March 4, Norton was at the due election for the 33 seats of New York as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on December 6, 1875. Until March 3, 1877, he could end the current parliamentary term in Congress. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Norton operated again in agriculture. He died on October 28, 1887 in Hinsdale.
