The American lotus (Nelumbo lutea), together with the Indian lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) the plant genus lotus flower (Nelumbo ).

Features

The American lotus flower is a perennial, herbaceous aquatic plant with rhizomes. The 2 m or more long -stalked leaves are Peltatum. The lamina has a circular diameter of 50 to 80 cm.

The hermaphrodite flowers have a diameter of up to 25 cm and are 1 to 1.5 m above the water. The many bright yellow bracts are 1-13 cm long; the outermost one to five remain long. The dust bags are 1 to 2 cm long. There are many free carpels present. Pollination is by beetles.

The more or less spherical fruit has a size of 10 to 16 × 8 to 13 mm.

Occurrence

The American lotus can be found in the eastern United States.
