Nemesio Díez Stadium

  • Football World Cup 1970
  • Football World Cup 1986

The Estadio Nemesio Díez is a football stadium in Toluca, the state capital of Mexico. It is owned by the Mexican first division club Deportivo Toluca, which plays its home games here. Unlike many other states of Mexico, who are more on the outskirts, the Estadio Nemesio Díez is located in the city center. Furthermore, the proximity of the stands to the pitch conveys an "English flair ".

History

The stadium had different names throughout history: Héctor Barraza, Luis Gutiérrez Dosal, La Bombonera and Nemesio Díez Riega today.

In its early days, the football team founded in 1917 the club Toluca played on a site called Presa de Gachupines that the club had acquired in 1919. Later they wore some games on the Tívoli; a place that was only a few blocks from the stadium today.

1953 bought the board of the Club Toluca sport court Patria and still started the same year with the expansion and modernization of existing stands. After completion and official opening on August 8, 1954, the club finally had its own stadium. It was initially named after Héctor Barraza and later to the club president of Deportivo Toluca, was built and inaugurated the stadium under whose direction: Luis Gutiérrez Dosal.

On Sunday, February 19, 1967 Deportivo Toluca won in this stadium his first championship with a 2-0 win over Necaxa.

World Cup

The stadium hosted the FIFA World Cup 1970 and 1986, which were held in Mexico.

1970 found in the Estadio Luis Dosal Gutiérrez, as it was then, a total of four games instead. First, all three group matches in Group B without the participation of the national team of Uruguay, who played their matches at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla: June 3, the encounter between Italy and Sweden ( 1-0), on June 7, the match between Sweden and Israel ( 1:1) and on 11 June, the last group match between Italy and Israel ( 0:0). Also, here took place on 14 June, the quarter-final match between hosts Mexico and Italy, the winner of Group B, instead. To the chagrin of most viewers Mexico was defeated by eventual runners-up despite a 1-0 lead clearly with 1:4.

1986 found in the stadium La Bombonera ( the chocolate box ), as it was called at that time, three group matches in Group B.: June 4, Paraguay against Iraq ( 1-0), on June 8, Belgium against Iraq (2: 1) and on 11 June of Belgium against Paraguay (2-2 ). Fourth team in the group, incidentally, was host Mexico, whose group matches, however, were all held at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City.
