Neolloydia conoidea

Neolloydia is a genus of flowering plants of the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name of the genus honors the botanist Francis Ernest Lloyd ( 1868-1947 ). The addition of " Neo " was necessary because the name was already assigned to Lloydia a genus of Liliaceae ( Liliaceae ).

Description

The small, low-growing species of the genus Neolloydia individually or form loose cushion. The slightly yellowish green shoots have whitish for ordinary woolly apex and are spherical to cylindrical. With a diameter of 3-6 inches they reach stature heights between 5 and 24 centimeters. Ribs are weak or lacking. The cone-shaped, 3 to 10 mm long, 6-10 mm broad warts, however, are distinct. The dimorphic, 3 to 5 mm in diameter are large areolae 8-12 mm away from each other and have a groove on areolare. The 1-2 (rarely to 6) central spines, which may be absent, are variable, black to reddish - brown, straight and upright. They are 5-25 mm long. The bright, straight spines are all white or whitish with a dark tip and reach a length of 5 to 7 mm.

The rather small, funnel-shaped flowers are purple, 2-3 inches long with a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. Your flower cups is bald.

The round, green, later greenish- brown fruits are becoming bald, not tearing up and have a diameter of 4 to 5 millimeters. They contain black, pear-shaped, gewarzte seeds.

Systematics and distribution

The distribution of the genus Neolloydia extends from west Texas, south through the Chihuahuan Desert to the north of Mexico to Queretaro.

The first description of the genus in 1922 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose. The type species of the genus Mammillaria is conoidea. The genus includes the species:

  • Neolloydia matehualensis Backeb.

A synonym of the genus is napina Fric.
