Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 45 to 58 mm. They have a white wing ground color. On the tops of the front wings runs a narrow black band of the wing root, along the front edge and ends in Diskoidalfleck. With this feature, the style is unmistakable. A broad, dark binding in Submarginalregion does not reach the inner edge and has near the apex some bright shade. The veins occur on the top and bottom of the white, drawing loose hind wings clearly in black color.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The blue- green eggs have approximately the shape of a double cone rounded at the ends, at the top of a small whitish crown is. They are provided on the entire surface with transverse ribs and are stored in a row between three and 22 piece to the needle of a food plant.

Adults caterpillars are green, sometimes purplish shimmer and are decorated with white longitudinal lines. At the end there are two short tails.

Distribution and habitat

The distribution area of polygonia faunus extends from British Columbia south through the western and some central states of the USA to California. The species prefers populated with pines ( Pinus ) (English: Pine ) passed forests, which is why it is referred to in English as White Pine.

Way of life

The species forms from one generation per year. Main flight period are the months of July to September. The moths suck for holding food like at flowers. Young caterpillars live sociable, older one. Spun nests are not created. They feed on the needles of a variety of different (Pinaceae ), particularly the ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa). Other food crops include the following conifers: Western Hemlock ( Tsuga heterophylla ), balsam fir (Abies balsamea ), Grand Fir (Abies grandis ) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis). As forest pest they occur very rarely. The species overwinters as an egg.
