Fins formula: Dorsal VIII/7-9, Anal III/4-6, pectoral 18-24.
System
The systematic position of the Neosebastidae is controversial. In Fishbase and the World Register of Marine Species, they form a distinct family. The American ichthyologist Joseph S. Nelson will arrange it as subfamily Neosebastinae to the scorpion fish, but admits a possible relationship with the Platycephaloidei ( gurnard and relatives ).
