The Fountain of Neptune is a monumental fountain in the center of Munich. It is located in the Old Botanical Garden at the Elise Street, near Charles Square (Stachus). It was built in 1937 according to plans by Joseph Wackerle and Oswald Bieber.

Appearance

In the middle of the building built by Oswald Bieber basins, which is 30 meters long and 15 meters wide, the body set up by Josef Wackerle figure of Neptune rises. Neptune is shown with trident and his tunic over his shoulder next to a fischschwänzigem Ross, which has brought him to the surface in a victorious pose. This powerful appearance of the heroes with the muscular physique is accentuated by the water-spouting Tritons surrounding him. The figure group is complemented by a short -tempered intervals fountain on the belly of the horse; also covered several thin beams from the mussels in the Great Basin. The fountain is surrounded in the center of the park with flowers. Around the fountain there are several benches.

History

The Old Botanical Garden was created 1804-1814 by Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell. The remaining entrance to the Old Botanical Garden created Emanuel Herigoyen. On the site, there was also the Glass Palace, which was built in 1854 on the occasion of the First General German Industrial Exhibition in 1931, however, one was destroyed by fire. In the years 1935-1937, the park was redesigned by order of the Nazis by Oswald Bieber and Joseph Wackerle. A large part of the soil and trees from the construction work for the parade ground of the Nazi party on the Place Royal was again used here. In addition was built in the axis of Arcisstraße at the northern end of the park, a cafe, today's " Park Café", adapted itself to the style of the former party district facing the street with four massive piers. On the south side next to an exhibition building of the Fountain of Neptune in the axis of the Palace of Justice was established.
