Nes (Ameland)

Nes, Nes earlier in de Duinen, is a village on the West Frisian, Dutch island of Ameland.

History

After Hollum it is with some 1200 inhabitants, is the second largest village on the island. It is famous for its historic sea captains' houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, with its large pedestrian zone, are the numerous restaurants and shops, the tourist center of Ameland. Major sights and attractions are next to the beach, the historic village core with a detached bell-tower of the 17th century, the former seat of the Dutch Rescue Society, the Windmill " De Phenix " and the recreation area " De Vleyen ". Moreover, there are in Nes a large natural history museum with a viewing tower. In Nes is also the ferry port of the island, from which the ferries from Holwerd. Adjacent to the ferry terminal is a marina. Right on Ferry is also the tourist office on the island.
