Nesle

Nesle [ nɛl ] is a commune with 2456 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region; it belongs to the district Peronne and is the administrative center of the canton of Nesle. The town lies on the River Unitingon which opens a few kilometers further into the Canal du Nord.

History

In the Middle Ages Nesle was one of the most powerful lords of Vermandois. Since the beginning of the 12th century, the lords of Nesle also Viscount of Bruges in Flanders were. The castle sold Jean II de Nesle 1224 ( See also County Nesle ).

1141 joined Renaud III. , Count of Soissons, his possessions to his brother Ives II of Nesle from, which the lords of Nesle Count of Soissons were. You were able to keep the county until the mid- 14th century.

The family owned in Paris on the left bank of the Seine, opposite the Louvre, the Hôtel de Nesle with its gardens, which were among the most beautiful in the city, and the Tour de Nesle (c. 1200). This tower was the western end of the southern wall of the ring. The Quai de Nesle (today Quai de Conti ), was the first paved part of Riverside ( 1313 ).
