Nesolagus

The strips rabbits ( Nesolagus ) are a genus of the family of hares ( Leporidae ). They differ from all other rabbits by the striped coat pattern. Their basic color is gray on top and white on the bottom, several dark brown or black stripes appear on the back, on the flanks and in the face along. The ears are very short. With a head-body length of 37-42 centimeters and a weight of about 1.5 kilograms, they belong to the minor hare species. The genus includes two species, the Sumatran rabbit and the Annamite rabbit strip.

Species

Sumatran Rabbit

The Sumatran rabbit ( N. nets cheri ) is endemic to the west of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Its habitat is mountain forests 600-1600 m altitude. Sumatran rabbits are extremely shy, nocturnal animals during the day they retreat into caves or burrows of other animals. Their food are leaves and plant stems.

This animal is one of the rarest mammals in general. After several sightings 1880-1916, it took until 1972 before you could watch again live specimens. Main reason for the threat is loss of habitat through large-scale land clearing for the establishment of plantations. An estimate from 1996 is based on 250 live specimens, the IUCN classified the species as " endangered" ( vulnerable ).

Annamitisches strip rabbit

The Annamite rabbit strip ( N. timminsi ) was first described scientifically in 2000. The first parts of this animal was found at a food market in Laos, since then it has been spotted in Vietnam.

The Annamite rabbit strip thrives in moist, evergreen forests on the seaward slopes of the Truong Son mountain range in areas where there is no or only a short dry period. Usually it is found at altitudes below 1000 meters. Since it also in intensively farmed areas are some sightings ( no clearcuts ), the deterioration of the habitat is probably not the greatest threat to the article The main threat comes from hunting with traps.

The strips rabbits are assigned as an independent genus the rabbit ( Leporidae ). The scientific description was in 1899 by Charles Immanuel Forsyth Major.

On the basis of molecular biological data was Conrad A. Matthee et al. 2004, a cladogram developed that represents the phylogenetic relationships of the genera within the bunnies to each other. Thus, the rabbit strip a taxon consisting of the African bush rabbits ( Poelagus marjorita ) and also in Africa domestic Rotkaninchen ( Pronolagus ) are compared as a sister group. Together, this group is the sister group to all other genera of hares.
