NetBIOS Frames protocol

NetBEUI (NetBIOS Extended User Interface) is a network protocol.

Construction

NetBEUI is part of the Microsoft protocol stack and at the network layer (layer 3 ) of the OSI layer model located, from where it communicates with the NetBIOS ( presentation layer ) and to the LLC (data link layer ). NetBEUI, together with the Microsoft NetBIOS protocol stack, which has conventionally been replaced in current networks by the IP protocol stack.

The report header is 132 bits in size. It is small and fast, but not routable. Basis for data transport are hardware addresses ( MAC addresses), so it requires no additional tools such as IP addresses, identifying the source and destination computers made only by host name. This host name under Windows, the "Computer Name". He may for NetBEUI not exceed 15 characters.

Use

NetBEUI was under Windows a simple and easy -to-use network protocol available, that was indeed suitable for home users and small businesses, but not for corporations with multiple network segments or even the connection to the Internet. The typical network size is about 10 to 20 users. NetBEUI is not compatible with IPX / SPX or AppleTalk, which additionally limits the use.

The then prevailing network was also the proprietary Novell Netware. Digital Equipment developed for Microsoft's " Windows for Workgroups 3.11 " DEC Pathworks to enhance the compatibility with other operating systems. A major point of criticism was the excessive Broadcasting component of NetBEUI of total traffic within the network, which later contributed to a reorientation towards TCP / IP.

Importance of the Protocol

The Windows network was originally based on this transport protocol because Microsoft had the use of the Internet not originally provided by home users. It was used up to and including Windows Me or Windows 2000 as the default protocol, although SMB over TCP / IP has been supported since Windows for Workgroups ( had here but only be installed manually ). With Windows for Workgroups already integrated NetBEUI reached its greatest spread, since this version of Windows for the first time already provided for the networking between Windows computers with available materials.

However, the TCP / IP protocol has been indispensable by the triumph of the Internet and the general standard for smaller networks, probably because of its system openness and flexibility. For Windows XP, installation of NetBEUI is offered or optional ( for eventual use in the LAN ), but no longer officially supported by Microsoft. Starting with Windows Vista, it is no longer available ( the XP version is actually still run ) and is now considered historic.
