New Darchau is a municipality in the district Lüchow -Dannenberg in Lower Saxony. It is part of Elbtalaue.

Geography
Geographical Location
New Darchau lies on the left bank of the Elbe, about 15 km downstream of Hitzacker and 12 km upstream from Bleckede. The place is located about 35 km east of Lüneburg. Directly across from New Darchau, on the right bank, the village is Darchau (municipality Amt Neuhaus, district of Lüneburg ).
The municipality is located in the Natural Park of the Elbe Valley, partially also in the Biosphere Reserve Lower Elbtalaue. Through the village flows the mill stream which flows into the Elbe on the outskirts of the village.

The community of New Darchau existed since the municipal reform of 1972 from the nine districts listed below. In addition, the living space Darzauer mill exists.

Before 1972 Darzauer mill belonged to the municipality Darzau. The community Katemin 1972 incorporated in the district of Lüneburg in the Lüchow- Dannenberg.
The six located directly on the Elbe districts Katemin, New Darchau, Small Kühren, Schutschur, Glienitz and Drethem have grown together now more or less completely. The first three go directly into one another; the more long sections are separated from each other by only a few 100m.
History
During the German division of New Darchau lay in the border area, the Elbe formed the border between Lower Saxony and the German Democratic Republic ( district of Schwerin ). The Office Neuhaus including the sister congregation Darchau on the other river bank were thus inaccessible behind the "Iron Curtain".
Incorporations
On 1 July 1972, the municipalities Darzau, Drethem, Glienitz, Katemin were incorporated (until then in the district of Lüneburg), Small Kühren, Quarstedt, Sammatz and Schutschur.
Policy
The municipality is part of the New Darchau Parliament Constituency 48 Elbe and the Bundestag constituency 38 Lüchow -Dannenberg - Lüneburg.
Parish council
The Council of the municipality of New Darchau is made up of eleven Council women and men, and has since the local elections 2006, the following distribution of seats:

- FWG: 2 seats
- Greens: 1 seat

Religions
The Evangelical Lutheran Church Community New Darchau has its official seat in parish Nau Darchau and shared with the congregation Hitzacker the parish. At the parish include the churches of St Peter in New Darchau, the church in Drethem and the half-timbered chapel in Wietzetze.
Economy and infrastructure
In the center, on the bridge of the main road over the mill stream, is the water mill. There is a marina at the mouth of Mühlbach. In addition to a shop to supply the daily needs are also doctors and dentist in town. Furthermore, the place has a primary school with gymnasium, a nursery and a sports court called " the river Elbe Arena " on amongst others, the football club " SV banks of the Elbe " is native.
Traffic
Through the village leads the Elbuferstraße, a tourist route. The nearest railway station is located in Breese (municipality Nahrendorf ), 8 km to the south. In Goehrde and Dahl castle is connected to the B 216 from Lüneburg to Dannenberg.
Between New Darchau and Darchau, on the right bank, operates throughout the year the car ferry " Tanja ". The construction of a bridge is planned to primarily bind to the Amt Neuhaus better to the county town of Lüneburg. However, already planning several attempts have been stopped in court, or could not even be tackled due to conflicts with the Habitats Directives of the EU. In the circle Lüchow -Dannenberg, especially in New Darchau itself, pushes the plan to build a bridge over the Elbe, with criticism because they feared a strong increase of through traffic.
