New Hohenschonhausen located in the north -east of Berlin on the Barnim plateau. The district is largely identical with the development area Hohenschonhausen -Nord. It is bordered on the north by the districts Malchow, Wartenberg and Falkenberg, on the east by Marzahn ( Marzahn- Heller village), on the south by Old - Hohenschonhausen and to the west by the districts of Weissensee and city Malchow (both Pankow ).

Already in the 19th century existed west of the old village Hohenschonhausen on the territory of today's sports forum also a settlement called New Hohenschonhausen. The term was used at least into the 1960s for this district. These days the area is no longer designated by this term.

History

Development and establishment

In the 1970s, grew up around the old village of Hohenschonhausen and north of the Lenin Avenue (since 1992: Landsberger Allee) development areas Hohenschonhausen I and Hohenschonhausen II for a total of 25,000 inhabitants. But because the population increased rapidly, started in 1981 the development of the future development area Hohenschonhausen -Nord. In 1982, the first infrastructure was established with the necessary streets and given names, as of 1984 opened up especially public transport, the area, usually by trams and S-Bahn. In the same year, the symbolic foundation stone was laid by the GDR Staatsratsorsitzenden Erich Honecker.

The development area is divided by the Falk Chaussee and the Berlin outer ring into four quarters. These quarters were there initially to the hamlets Malchow, Wartenberg and Falkenberg, where the streets and residential blocks were not tied to the progress of these limits. The development led next to Berlin's operations and those of the districts of Rostock, Schwerin, Neubrandenburg and Frankfurt ( Oder) with from there delivered finished products made. Be clearly seen, this is due to the different design of the slab as well as the names of the streets. Three of the four quarters were named after places in the home districts of the construction companies.

Independent District

In January 1985, the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED decided on 1 September of the same year, the formation of the autonomous municipality Hohenschonhausen. These included the eponymous district and Falkenberg, Wartenberg and about half of Malchow. The western half remained with the city Weissensee district, which on 1 January 1986 received the Pankow districts Karow, Heiner village of Blankenburg and after the formation of the then new city district. The new city district on the first day consisted of some 67,000 residents, until 1989, the population had risen to 118,000, which represented about 9.2 percent of the total population of East Berlin. Especially young families received the coveted new apartments. The first years were marked by numerous construction sites, the district was only in process of formation. To live not only in " bare concrete ", there have been several initiatives of citizens to beautify their municipality, actions such as the Golden House number for the beautification of the entrances and gardens is just one of them. The construction of the settlement was officially ended on October 5, 1989.

In the new residential areas also emerged production facilities within the new district. In addition to the newly constructed Bus depot in the Indira Gandhi Road, among other things, VEB Berlin Chemie trade, or VEB signaling and safety equipment settled. Already located on Marzahn area, but often confused, also Falkenberg treatment plant was built in the years 1963-1968.

Turning and political start

In Hohenschonhausen, as elsewhere, the election results for the 1990 municipal elections were probably manipulated, but the majority chose the candidate of the National Front. The growing discontent of the citizens in this district also led to growing criticism of the political system and to the SED. Shortly after the resignation of Erich Honecker from his position in October 1989 there was the first town hall meetings with local political tips to soothe the discontented citizens. After the fall of the wall, these structures solved however, as elsewhere. An exception was the Borough Assembly ( BVV ), here continues to dominate the Left.

The change led to a gradual decline in population numbers: the mid-1990s there were nearly 115,000 to the turn of the millennium to 110,000. The majority of the population lived in this area of the later hamlet of New Hohenschonhausen. This was formed by the merger of the borough, the Lichtenberg of the districts Malchow, Wartenberg and Falkenberg and only includes the development area.

Dividing the local area

New Hohenschonhausen completely encloses the putative Hohenschonhausen development area. This is divided by the Falk Chaussee and the Berlin outer ring into four quarters, the mill base, the district on the Zingster and Vincent van Gogh Road and the Crooked lake of fire. Since the individual development areas were initially to the formerly independent villages and modern districts Malchow, Wartenberg and Falkenberg, this district will be designated as the new residential area to the Crooked lake of fire as a new Wartenberg, the residential area on the edge of the village of Falkenberg as " New Falkenberg "; the " Ostseeviertel " around the Zingster street got its name due to the naming of streets after Baltic cities (eg Zingst and Prerow ). The residential buildings, 1984-1989, and are usually six or elfgeschossig.

Development area Muhlengrund - Flurnamen district

The development area mill base is the first of four new areas of the later New Hohenschonhausen that has been realized. It is located in southeastern New Hohenschonhausen. The name Muhlengrund refers to a small garden area southwest of the development area. This in turn has her by a former, close to formerly existing Erdholländer.

The street names to the mill base with names such as " Maten ", " Röttken " or " Rotkamp " go back to old districts on the Wartenberg or Malchower hallway.

The neighborhood was built from 1982 to 1987, initially started down the streets, followed in 1984, the extension of the tram from the Gehrenseestraße after Zingster road and shortly afterwards the actual construction of the apartments. These are six - or eleven-storey building, the latter with elevator. The apartments could be obtained in some cases only two to three years after its completion, as through increased between the groundwater level and the basement flooded.

The central location of the neighborhood is an unnamed place, which, however, the unofficial designation " On Muhlengrund " contributes to emphasize the agrarian tradition and the historical vicinity of this residential area to a former Dutch mill. The ensemble of the square include a former HO- department store and commercial new construction, as Muhlengrund Center replaced the former service complex with youth club Rotkamp, cleaning, mail receiving office, florist, and the club restaurant Muhlengrund 1997. The square itself is adorned by Mühlenradbrunnen to be taken now, after years of closure by basic redesign of the new concrete plant and restoration of the fountain art end of 2014 again. As part of this reorganization measure in place of the demolition of all commercial buildings located there, and the creation of 372 residential units is provided by the owner of the mill basic centers where medical practices and restaurants, and retail minimized to get their place. Reason of the demolition is the competitive situation of the local shopping center to enhance the Linden Center, which led to large commercial vacancy rates and inventory neglect on the town square.

The mid-1990s began the first phase of renovation of the housing stock. All houses were of the Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft New Berlin eG and renovated strand HOWOGE housing mbH and the GSV- Council bleaching construction management and administrative GmbH; Heating systems and windows were renewed, modernized the stairwells and facades clad with insulating protection - not least because even the better optics. 2004, as were some of the six-storey houses exterior elevators.

At the south end of the road is the Zingster Prerower place. At this, the Linden Centre, a shopping center and at the same time the district center of New Hohenschonhausen is. The Prerower Square and the adjacent Falk Chaussee form here the core of all four new neighborhood and serve as a meeting place, not least, to exchange information.

At the northwestern edge of the development area up to Malchower See the Niles settlement that emerged in the 1930s extends. The area of the Niles- settlement belonged at that time to Malchow.

Development area Uckermärkisches quarter - Vincent van Gogh Road

The houses along the Vincent van Gogh Road to 1988 originated southeast of the S-Bahn station Hohenschonhausen. Often this area is already counted about Falkenberg, as the district belonged to the same district until 2002. The term has nevertheless remained so between the new development area ( New Falkenberg ) and the village center Falkenberg is distinguished.

At the Vincent van Gogh Road with the " catfish galleries " the central place of the district. The streets, named after rivers and communities in Uckermark such as catfish, Randow or Warnitz run, semi-circular on the Falkenberg Road.

The development area manifold slough extends northwest of the S-Bahn station Hohenschonhausen to the village core of Wartenberg. It was completed as the last of the four new neighborhood in 1989.
