Neue Deutsche Biographie

The New German Biography ( NDB ) is published by the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and one of the most important German- biographical reference works. So far there are 25 volumes in more than 21,800 individual and family products before (March 2013). The names of persons contained therein can be researched along with those from the General German Biography (ADB ) on a website of the Bavarian State Library (BSB ) in the joint ADB & NDB total register. The contributions are written by each individual expert authors and usually contain also name variations, information on genealogy, resumes with historical classification, awards, resources, materials and bibliographies, as well as Portrait evidence.

The first volume of NDB appeared in 1953. The work is calculated at 28 volumes, which should be available by 2020. Editors were Otto Graf zu Stolberg- Wernigerode ( until 1967 ), Walter Bussmann (1968 ), Fritz Wagner ( to 1987 ), Karl Otmar Freiherr von Aretino (until 1998) and Hans Günter Hockerts (until 2012 ). Since January 2013 directs Maximilian Lanzinner the editors.

Online research

Since August 2001, published by the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek total registers in the Internet is freely accessible. Since April 2008 the first 22 volumes of the NDB also are available online and linked to the registers, as well as since 2002 the digitalization of the Electronic General German Biography (E -ADB ); in July 2010, followed by Volume 23 ( Schinzel - Black ), in October 2013 Volume 24 ( Black - Stader ). The total tab was published from 2003 to 2010 in four editions in a rotational basis updated and expanded form on CD- ROM. The names of registers with updated additional information and bio - bibliographical references concerning since July 2009, integrated into the Biography Portal. After approval by the German Research Foundation ( DFG), the first 23 volumes of the NDB and 55 volumes of the ADB are provided as TEI - structured xml full text on the internet since February 2010. In addition, about 93,000 names contained in the General Index were compared from ADB and NDB with the Name Authority File (PND ) and thereby re-created approximately 37,000 records. On the basis of the digitized main file of the NDB 2011 editorial further 34,000 people with the PND matched data sets were integrated into the index in July. In February 2012, the DFG has approved an application for the extension of the German biography of a central historical and biographical information system for the German-speaking countries. Here, the common authority file (GND ) is the basis for the systematic networking with other personal resources such as the Central database Rebates from the Federal Archives.
