History

Background and construction

Leipzig has had since the late 1830s a railway connection, Chemnitz received early 1850s a railway connection for traffic between the two cities but was still a long way round via Riesa necessary. Therefore, still made in the 1850s first railway committee, who demanded the construction of a route from Leipzig to Chemnitz. In addition to the industry- rich Mulde, other cities such as Borna, Burgstädt, Lausigk, Limbach and Penig have benefited from the course. Each committee presented its own route, the preferred as much as possible their own place.

The various plans differ greatly, some saw a direct route from Leipzig to Chemnitz before, others by Kieritzsch on the railway Leipzig -Hof in Chemnitz, some had not even Chemnitz as a direct target. Especially the city of Borna vehemently demanded their rail connection. Although the town was only seven kilometers from the railway Leipzig -Hof, the city came through the elaborate road transport economically more and more into the background. All plans were rejected by the Saxon State. A direct connection was already become unrealistic with the concessioning of the railway line Borsdorf - Coswig because the connection Leipzig- Chemnitz would have been too close to the railway line already approved.

The town of Borna then applied to the construction of the line Kieritzsch - Borna 1864 at his own expense. This was granted, but the state retained the operational control. Were completed on 14 January 1867 - delayed by the German War 1866 - In October 1865, the construction work that began.

For the further construction in Chemnitz Saxony's State favored as a private financing, but there is no candidate who could produce the necessary for the expensive Streckenbau Finance found. Ultimately, the Saxon state parliament decided to build the line at government expense. Longer controversy however, there were still over the planned lines. Longer time favorite is a direct connection from Leipzig to Geithain. Ultimately, the decision was made for reasons of cost for the route of Borna about Geithain and Burgstädt to Chemnitz. Over Railways branch also Limbach, Penig and Rochlitz should be connected.

In the spring of 1869 we began work on the track. In Göhren, Burgstädt Chemnitz and the creation of several large viaducts was necessary. On April 8, 1872, the operation was opened on the new route. It was opened together with branch paths to Limbach, Penig and Rochlitz. The urban railway Kieritzsch - Borna was already gone on October 1, 1870 in state ownership, so that now there was a continuous state railway line between Leipzig and Chemnitz.

In 1945, the second track was completely dismantled, but built between Neukieritzsch and Borna and between Wittgensdorf and Chemnitz- Küchwald later. On January 15, 1962, the German Reichsbahn took between Neukieritzsch and Borna on Electric traction.

Between 2004 and 2006 there was a modernization of the route Leipzig- Chemnitz Bad Lausick to increase the top speed to 160 km / h More than 100 million euros were invested for this purpose. In this context, the second track was built as an encounter between section Geithain Narsdorf and again on December 11, 2005. The Cossen station was abandoned as an access point.

Since the completion of the construction work is with the trains on the RE 6 (Chemnitz -Leipzig- Express) on an Hourly, fast rail service between Chemnitz and Leipzig. The trains of the line RE 6 associate with tilting technology and need of Geithain to Chemnitz only 26 minutes compared to 39 minutes before 2005. Perverted By 2011, with the RE 28 Leipzig- Chemnitz- Cranzahl on Saturdays and Sundays in addition a Ausflugszugpaar.

The section from Borna to Geithain was electrified in the summer of 2010, so that the formerly over Borna circulating from Leipzig to Geithain transport line MRB 2/70 with the opening of the electric only navigable City-Tunnel Leipzig in December 2013 as the S -Bahn line S4 in the new network of S -Bahn means Germany could be included. In Frohnburg a new electronic interlocking was built. Eight million EUR were invested. Since December 15, 2013 the line S4 uses the new network, the S -Bahn central Germany, the section between Neukieritzsch and Geithain.

View

In the years 2008 and 2009 a study was prepared by the Technical University of Dresden, such as the route would have to be expanded to also offer long distance in addition to the existing local transport service on this relation can. Result of the study was that the route for ( almost ) would have to be continuous double track and electrified throughout, to allow a fast traffic (eg with electrical tilt technology -ICE ). Announced in early 2009, the then Minister of Transport Saxon Jurkschat to have the necessary planning to pre-finance by the Free State of Saxony.

End of January 2012 presented the state of Saxony before its plans to implement the electrification between Geithain and Chemnitz. After that should be available by 2013, the preliminary planning. A construction is dated back to 2015 /16, with a construction period of three years. This gap closure Chemnitz can be connected to the central German S -Bahn network. A complete double-track lines is provided in a further step.

Beginning of January 2013 signed a contract to leading variant selection for the expansion and electrification of the Chemnitz -Leipzig Free State and German railway. In this case a guide about Bad Lausick and over Borna should be investigated. As a result of the preliminary investigation Routing over Bad Lausick was set as the preferred alternative. The main advantages of this version a viable travel time of 50 minutes and the passenger-friendly transfer connections to the other long-distance lines in Leipzig Central Station were given. In July 2013, the Free State of Saxony and the German Bahn signed a planning agreement for the further expansion and continuous electrification of the railway line from Leipzig - Chemnitz. The State Government provides this planning funds in the amount of 2.4 million euros. The preliminary design will be completed in summer 2014. The project was registered for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2015.

Route description

Course

The route runs largely parallel to the main road 176 to Borna and follows from Neukirchen to Niedergräfenhain turn the course of the federal highway 72 in Geithain station the catenary ends, leaving only the stump track for trains to and from Neukieritzsch is spanned. Behind Geithain the route reaches the Mittelsächsische loess hill country and meets in Narsdorf on the disused railway line Rochlitz - Penig. After bypassing the village Göhren in a quarter circle the valley of the river Mulde, together with the railway line Glauchau Wurzen is crossed ( " Muldentalbahn " ) on Göhrener viaduct. In Stone, the distance up to 600 meters of the Valley of the Chemnitz running, disused railway exchange Burg- Küchwald approaches to ( " Chemnitz Valley Railway "). Over a long-drawn city viaduct Burgstädt station is finally reached, which lies on the eastern edge of the city. After confluence of the disused track from Limbach- Oberfrohna the highest point of the track is reached at the upper station of Wittgensdorf. From here it leads with a maximum gradient of 1:100 in the floodplains of the Chemnitz, said federal highway 4 is crossed on the stretcher Bachmuhle viaduct. After the industrial railway was crossed from Gruena, hits the track at the train yard Küchwald on those as well as the hitherto largely parallel railway line change Burg- Küchwald from the direction of change castle. After an elongated right curve the route finally reaches the railway lines from Riesa and Dresden, with which it maintains in common to the facilities of the Chemnitz Central Station.

Operating points

Neukieritzsch ⊙ 51.150612.4128

The Neukieritzsch station ( until October 3 1936 only station Kieritzsch ) was opened in 1842 along with the section of Leipzig -Altenburg train route Leipzig -Hof, the first rails were here since 1841. Nearby there own railway settlement developed, as the eponymous Place Kieritzsch was about 3 km. However, the station was still on the corridor of Kahnsdorf and Pürsten was, but both towns rejected the nomination by their community from. Even during the operation opening a repair facilities were available in Kieritzsch, with the opening of routes to Borna and to Pegau ( opened in 1909 ) of the station developed in the following decades to a small railway junction.

Around the station was created by the mining of brown coal plant a dense railway network. After 1945, the transport services in particular increased further in freight transport, so that the station had to be fully extended. Meanwhile, the station has been stripped down to a few tracks.

Lobstädt ⊙ 51.135912.4492

First opened only as a stop Lobstädt at the private route Kieritzsch - Borna, the station was later expanded several times. The train station Lobstädt was raised on 1 May 1905. Due to lignite mining, the station assumed greater importance since in Lobstädt were several briquette.

As early as the 1980s went back the amount of traffic a bit, a large decrease took place in the 1990s, as all briquette closed. Since September 9, 1999 Lobstädt is therefore only one breakpoint.

Borna ( b Leipzig) ⊙ 51.116912.4868

The Borna (Leipzig) station as the terminus of the private railway was built near the city center. Due to lignite mining, as well as the route extension to Chemnitz the importance of the station grew more and more. It soon became a further expansion at the current location ( near the intersection of today's B 93 and B 176) no longer possible. Therefore, a completely new railway station was built in 1903 /04 southwest of the old site built in the suburbs. On October 1, the station was put into operation, the old station served henceforth as connecting web is still the freight. In addition to connecting railroads at various opencast lignite mines also a Lokstation with two standing boiler house was built. From then on, various shunting locomotives were stationed here.

In the following decades, the station continued to grow. Recent major construction took place with the construction of the railway Borna Großbothen in the 1930s. Although the route chain until it is at Neukirchen- Wyhra station, the trains ran but from and to Borna. After the end of World War II the station learned again a traffic increase, since hardly any foreign fuels were available. The Briekttfabrikation to Borna reached in the 1960s, culminating, daily for 10 trains with crude lignite briquettes or were worn. With the electrification of the section Leipzig- Borna, the station was also Lokwechselstation.

After 1989/90 continued a rapid decline of the Bornaer a train station, still in the first half of the 1990s included all briquette of surrounding land, thus the freight consumption almost completely together. Today, no more freight transport takes place and the tracks were sharply built. Only the reception building was renovated.

The station wore during his time already operating five different names, in detail, these were:

  • To September 30, 1901 Borna
  • To 30 June 1911 Borna near Leipzig
  • To 21 December 1933: Borna b Leipzig
  • Since December 22, 1933: Borna ( b Leipzig)

DB Station and Service performs the station since 28 May 2000 Borna station ( Leipzig ), although no railway authorities was renamed.

Petersgrube ⊙ 51.098612.503

The breakpoint Peter pit was opened on 1 December 1950. The station was built especially for commuter traffic in the lignite mining area. An eponymous village there is not, but is Plateka (now part of Borna ) directly northeast of the breakpoint.

Neukirchen- Wyhra ⊙ 51.087812.5335

The station was opened on 1 May 1902 as the breakpoint Neukirchen- Wyhra; were preceded by long-standing efforts of the affected communities. Something importance was the station in 1937, when the branching here railway Borna Großbothen was opened. The breakpoint was indeed brought to the station, the trains to and from Großbothen but began already in Borna. When the lignite mining recorded south of Leipzig and the area south of Borna, was a dense plant railway network. Of which branched off several industrial railways in Neukirchen- Wyhra station. Today, the station is a stop again. The station building from the 1930s, which replaced the first station building from the early days is still present, but is otherwise used.

Frohnburg ⊙ 51.069112.5593

Until the opening of the railway line Frohnburg - Kohren in 1906 the Frohnburg station was fairly insignificant. South for the route of the existing facilities Kohren was part of a new railway station. The station building consists of a central building, which connect two zweieinhalbgeschossige wing, continues to be a goods shed, Lokbehandlungsanlagen, two signal boxes and a farm building were built.

After 1967, the traffic was stopped on the way to Kohren- Sahlis, the importance of the station fell back. To date, the station was gradually dismantled on two tracks, a short remnant of the spur track after Kohren- Sahlis is still used as siding.

Village woman (Sachs) ⊙ 51.061612.6163

In the distance there was between opening Frohnburg and Geithain no further station, however, apply for the surrounding villages soon a train station. The breakpoint woman village was therefore opened on 1 June 1876 and 1878, the station was converted to a stop. Thus from now on also freight was possible. On 1 May 1905, the station to the station was elevated, at this time consisted woman village already two main tracks with two platforms and two other tracks with the appropriate freight facilities with charging road freight shed and a combined Kopf-/Seitenladerampe. In addition, Ms. village also served as a crossing station in order to achieve between Frohnburg and Geithain a higher flow capacity, which was necessary for traffic increases.

After 1990, the station was first built back to 2004 breakpoint and quite abandoned.

Geithain ⊙ 51.058212.6972

Initially, only through station, the railway station Geithain before using the railway line opened in 1887 Leipzig- Geithain was completely rebuilt. In addition, a Lokstation arose. Also in the freight Geithain had a greater importance because since the end of the 19th century large quantities of building materials to the nearby brickworks and quarries were loaded in the station.

The appearance today received the station area from 2002, when the route expansion Leipzig- Chemnitz large parts were dismantled the railway station.

Narsdorf ⊙ 51.010612.7168

First, a station on the Upper Grafe Hainer corridor should arise, but the people prevented this. Also in Narsdorf was one of the railway construction rather hostile. Therefore, the Narsdorf station was located on the corridor boundary between Narsdorf and Dölitzsch. Here, since the branch line branched off to Rochlitz or Penig, Narsdorf had greater operational significance from the beginning. Also, the trains of the railway line opened in 1901 Altenburg- Langenleuba - Oberhain were continued until Narsdorf.

After the economic changes caused by the turn of 1989/90 the importance of the station dropped tremendously. In all, emanating from Narsdorf branch paths of all traffic was stopped until 2000. Also, almost all tracks were completely degraded, allowing Narsdorf today is still only a simple breakpoint. The station building, the former boiler house and other buildings for freight are now empty and dilapidated increasingly.

Cossen ⊙ 50.968912.7798

Fitted was the Cossen station with a Empfansgegebäude, a farm building, an open latrine, a tool shed, a house and two interlocking. A goods shed was not available, although the station, especially in the freight had meaning, instead there was a loading dock and a charging road. Several sand pits from around here were loading sand on the railroad, was the antransportiert. Means of light railway and cable car At times, the Bahnmeisterei Chemnitz had a branch office, as the vehicle was a small car available.

Today in the train station are only two tracks, the two switches are remotely controlled by Geithain. Goods traffic is no longer being held for the passenger railway station in the 2000s has been closed. The buildings, if any are still available, mostly empty today.

Burgstädt ⊙ 50.915512.8124

The reception hall of the station Burgstädt was initially identical to the in Cossen and Frohnburg, also the Limbach station received a similar building. In 1910, the building is an annex, whose design has been even give rise to judicial proceedings. The station was part of the beginning to the main intermediate stations of the railway line. So about half a million people per year were handled, for example, around 1900. Since 1912 Burgstädt was also a fast train stop. In freight transport, the station had considerable importance, in addition to several terminals included a goods shed, two loading points and two ramp ( a head ramp and a side ramp ) to the existing plants. For shunting since the 1930s there was a small locomotive available, and the stations Cossen and Wittgensdorf ob Bf served with transfer trips. The vehicle was removed in the summer of 1991 the station.

A bus station on the station forecourt was created in 2003, before which remained from the early days of the reception building had been demolished. Also the tracks were significantly reduced from the original eight tracks, only the continuous main track and a railway siding available. Both are equipped with a platform, since the features of the City - track end Burgstädt.

Wittgensdorf ob Bf ⊙ 50.883412.8412

Here, since the branch line branched off to Limbach, belonged Wittgensdorf upper station from the beginning to the major operating locations. Significantly in the early days was the freight, there was the most obvious train stop for many factories from the Chemnitztal the train station. After 1902, the railroad change Burg- Küchwald was opened, the freight traffic declined significantly since Wittgensdorf now received a second station along this route, which was much cheaper for the factories.

The traffic on the route to Limbach -Oberfrohna was set in 2001. However, the station has a large operational importance as a short section is operated up to a storage tank regularly. Since 2005, this port is a side track to the train station.

Wittgensdorf middle ⊙ 50.874312.8695

The breakpoint wore during his time already operating three different names, in detail, these were:

  • To 30 April 1898: breakpoint Bahr Mill
  • To October 1, 1927 breakpoint means Wittgensdorf
  • Since October 2, 1927 Breakpoint Wittgensdorf center

The breakpoint Wittgens village center consists of only two platforms. On the platform towards Chemnitz is a small massive reception building with attached wooden Concourse, in the opposite direction, there is merely a wooden waiting room.

Chemnitz- Borna Hp ⊙ 50.859812.8944

The breakpoint wore during his time already operating four different names, in detail, these were:

  • To 30 June 1911 Borna near Chemnitz breakpoint

The breakpoint was opened on 15 July 1901 and today holds here only the City Railway, the second main track there is not even a platform.

Küchwald ⊙ 50.855512.9125

In the 1880s, the existing railway stations were in Chemnitz no longer adequate for the rapidly grown freight. In addition to a much-needed railway link numerous industries in the north of the city also lacked a powerful yard. Only one planned at a yard approximately on the site of the present station Küchwald. Although there was sufficient land available, but the station would have been off the main road towards Dresden -Zwickau -Reichenbach. As a new location therefore increasing the area south of the railway workshops was chosen. The route Kieritzsch - Chemnitz as well as the route Riesa- Chemnitz received a direct link to the newly built station Hilber village. At the orifice of this link Küchwald branch office was set up in 1902, the station was opened along with the rail yard and the connecting track. The rail line opened in 1902 Wechselburg - Küchwald used from here the tracks of the route Kieritzsch - Chemnitz to the central station.

Soon the station was expanded from 1903, the industrial railway Küchwald Obergrüna had its starting point and in the same area settled more factories. Partial took Küchwald also Zugbildungsaufgaben.

Since 1990, traffic has declined sharply. The track in Chemnitztal in 2002, shut down the route Gruena 2004, only the CHP in Chemnitz -Nord is still operated from here.

Chemnitz Hbf ⊙ 50.841112.9314

Today Chemnitz Central Station was built in 1852 as the endpoint of the segment Riesa- Chemnitz. With the construction of routes Chemnitz- Zwickau ( 1858), Chemnitz, Annaberg (1866 ), Borna Chemnitz Chemnitz- Adorf (1875 ) he became one of the most important Saxon railway junction. In addition to the application within the Personenverkahr the station was also in the long freight important until the late 1870s, the station was even the only one in Chemnitz with freight. Since the 1990s, the meaning has been greatly reduced by the general decline in traffic, Highway Loss and some line closures. Freight no longer takes place. The large depot Chemnitz Hbf, which was later merged with the depot Chemnitz- Hilbersdorf exists today as a depot Chemnitz.

Civil engineering

All major bridges were prepared from the outset for a double-track line expansion.

Wyhratalviadukt ⊙ 51.095812.513

The 198 m long Wyhratalviadukt at kilometer 10,48 bridged the river of the same name, it is 8 m high and 198 m long. It was built from September 1869 to August 1870, the cost of construction of the brick viaduct zwölfbögigen were around 70,000 dollars.

Niedergräfenhain Hainer viaduct ⊙ 51.059712.6418

Just as the viaduct Geithainer the Niedergräfenhain Hainer viaduct without the forced relocation of the Geithainer citizens route would not have been necessary. Was built the 150,000 Taler expensive building from July 1869 to November 1871. Using the 200 m long structure with 12 openings a valley is crossed.

Geithainer viaduct ⊙ 51.062112.6753

Geithainer the viaduct was built in July 1869 to semptember in 1871. During the construction of approximately 75,000 Taler expensive bridge, especially the wet ground proved to be a problem, the bridge piers held so extra deep foundations. The maximum height of the building is 17 m, it is 110 m long.

Göhrener viaduct ⊙ 50.981312.7691

The Göhrener viaduct with 412 m length was built from 1891 to 1871 of about 5,000 workers of granite. The 68 m high, 1.2 million dollars expensive building bridges over the river Mulde, the road Cossen exchange castle and the railway line Glauchau Wurzen. In addition to the large, deep Mulde traversing bridge openings there were Chemnitz 9 other smaller openings. The latter had become so damaged in the 1980s, they were filled mid-1980s, since then, the viaduct is only 263 m long. The rest of the viaduct was renovated from 1997 to 2001 for about 20 million marks fundamentally.

Cossener viaduct ⊙ 50.975112.7745

Had the 162 meter long viaduct Cossener six arches with a clear width of 17 m. The approximately 69,000 Taler expensive building had become so dilapidated in the 1960s, which were bricked in 1968 five of the six holes and then filled. Since the sixth opening led a service road, this was only significantly reduced.

City Viaduct Burgstädt ⊙ 50.919512.8151

The 427 m long viaduct city Burgstädt is the longest engineering structure in this section. It was built in 1869 /70 around 90,000 dollars to bypass the embankment of a railway embankment. With 34 holes with a wingspan of 9.9 m here a valley is crossed, the maximum height of the viaduct is 7.5 m. Since the 1960s, the viaduct should be set fundamentally repaired, due to financial difficulties, it did not happen. All openings should be filled up on the necessary road crossings here Similar to the Cossener viaduct. Meanwhile, this bridge was rehabilitated.

Bahrebachtalviadukt ⊙ 50.867912.8817

The Bahrebachtalviadukt cost around 310,000 dollars. Aur the 230 m long reclining in a curve is crossed beside the stretcher Bach since the 1930s and the present Federal Highway 4. Since the space between the piers of the original four-lane highway only for an expansion not get out enough, was from 1999 to 2003, converted complex.

Chemnitztalviadukt ⊙ 50.853712.9274

The 160,000 Taler expensive Chemnitztalviadukt was built by July 1869 to June 1871. It consists of a 180 m long multi-part steel support member, it is a brick-built 118 m long bridge member connects, the total length is 308 m. In the six steel trusses, each 25.5 m length of the river Chemnitz is crossed. The neunbogige brick bridge part bridged with an opening of 11.7 m the federal highway 107, the remaining eight holes have only 9.8 m inside diameter. This part is a slight curvature.

Due to the noise of the steel part at train it received from the vernacular also called " rattling bridge ". This bridge part was renovated in 2003 for 1.5 million euros.
