Neukölln Ship Canal

The Neukölln shipping canal is a waterway in the north east of the Berlin district of Neukölln.

It has a length of about four kilometers and connects the Landwehr canal from the Lohmühlenbrücke in the north ( km 0 ) to the Teltow and the Britz Britz connecting channel at the harbor in the south -east. At kilometer 3.3 is the lock Neukölln, which connects the upper port with the lower port. The responsible authority is the Senate of Berlin, Neukölln district office.

History

In planning and direction of Hermann Weigand holds a 1.9 -kilometer link between the Landwehr Canal and the former Rixdorfer gasworks was completed in 1902/1903 first. It was following the centuries- old " Schlangengraben ", which already resulted as a drainage ditch in the later Landwehr Canal. This section was Rixdorfer branch canal. Since 1904, the southern coastal road bears the name Weigandufer. In the years 1912/1913 the extension was made to the Teltow Canal. The water table width is in the Landwehr Canal attitude 22,10 meters, in the Teltow Canal attitude 26,60 meters. The water depth is in the lower stance ( canal) at 2.50 meters, in the upper ( Teltowkanal ) at 3.50 meters.

Lock Neukölln

The lock Neukölln was built in two phases 1902-1914 and served primarily to drain the area. It was built as a boiler lock with a length of 67 meters, a chamber width of 27.4 meters and a gate width of 8.5 meters. The mean difference between the upper and lower water is only 0.14 meters. The lock chamber was filled or emptied, was their operation by a smuggling guards manually at below- water ports. In the years 1959/1960 the lock was electrified, so that the doors could be opened by motors. 1968 a central operating station was created in a newly constructed lock keeper's house. In the years 2000 and 2001, the lock has been thoroughly overhauled and automated so that it can be operated from the boaters themselves. Ports

The Neukölln is located between the boundary Avenue and Lahnstrasse. It consists of the upper harbor and lying below the lock Neukölln sub port. There recyclables are handled mainly. A little further south, at the mouth of the Teltow Canal is the port Britz -east.

Spelling

The term " Neukölln shipping canal " is a proper noun and is therefore written after the spelling reform of 1996 with two "f". As the editor of the National Map series, the Neukölln Office of Planning, Building Regulations and surveying took this decision.
