Neutrino detector

Neutrino detectors ( also neutrino observatories or telescopes ) are particle detectors designed for the detection and measurement of neutrinos.

Neutrinos are affected only very weakly dependent on the normal matter surrounding us, ie Neutrino reactions have a very low cross -section. Therefore neutrino detectors must be very large in order to obtain in spite of the low cross-sections or count rates with reasonable measurements. In addition, the detectors at great depths or under mountains are built so that the rare neutrino events are not covered by the cosmic rays.

Depending on the neutrino source can be divided neutrino detectors in three families:

  • Solar neutrino detectors
  • Detectors in the vicinity of nuclear power plants
  • Detectors for neutrino beams

Some important neutrino detector are shown in the following table.
