Neuves-Maisons

Neuves- Maisons is a commune with 7115 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Nancy, capital is ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Neuves- Maisons and the seat of the municipal association Moselle et Madon.

Geography

The village lies on the River Moselle, about ten kilometers from Nancy. From 1958-1979, the flow of the estuary near Koblenz to Neuves- Maisons was made ​​navigable in the course of the Moselle canalization. This is also the last Moselle barrage and the northern end of the Canal des Vosges. Neuves- Maisons has an area of 4.44 square kilometers and is situated 217-360 meters above the sea.

History

From 130 inhabitants in 1616 to a place with 2377 inhabitants developed in 1901. A little later in the century Neuves Maisons has quadrupled its number of inhabitants. Although the mine in Val de Fer ( Eisental ) is no longer used since 1966, the steel mill is still the symbol of the city.
