Neuwiedia griffithii

Neuwiedia griffithii

Neuwiedia griffithii is a species in the genus Neuwiedia in the orchid family ( Orchidaceae). The herbaceous plants originating from Southeast Asia.

Description

Neuwiedia griffithii is 25 to 60 cm tall, the shoot is erect or ascending. The hairy roots have a diameter of 2 to 3 mm, occasionally they are, the longest hair on the roots are 1 to 1.3 mm long. The leaves are oblong -ovate to broadly linear, taper to a point at the end. The smallest leaves measure 6 cm length of 3.3 cm width, they can be up to 32 cm long with 5 cm width. There are nine to 37 veins present, seven of which stand out clearly. The upper leaves may be hairy, the hairs occur on the leaf margin and occasionally on the leaf blade. The hairs on the leaves are of different lengths, the longest measured 0.25 to 0.35 mm.

The inflorescence is a terminal raceme, he 4.5 is up to 15 cm long and thus is shorter than the leaves. Flowering plants were found in all seasons. An inflorescence contains 40 to 50, rarely up to 65 flowers. They are 13 to 17 mm in size, its color is white, rarely yellow, with green tops. Inflorescence axis, bracts and petals are hairy. The bracts are oval, lanceolate or linear, they end pointed, its length is 13 to 20 mm, width 0.5 to 6 mm. The flower stem is 3 mm long, 0.8 to 1 mm in diameter. The oval ovary measuring 5 mm in length from 2 to 3 mm in diameter, in cross section, it is approximately triangular with distinct longitudinal strips. The petals themselves are all quite similar, but there is a very slight differentiation between the two lateral and the middle petal of a circle. The sepals are hairy on the outside, lanceolate, the two sides are 7.7 to 8.5 mm at 2 to 3.5 mm width. The third sepal of 2 to 3 mm somewhat narrower. The petals are provided on the outside with a longitudinal keel, this is hairy. The two sides are oblong shaped, 7.7 to 8.5 mm long and 2.5 to 4.5 mm wide. The central petal, the lip is hardly different, is elliptically shaped, and having from 3 to 5 mm, is slightly wider than the other two inner petals. All petals are provided with a small, 0.4 to 0.8 mm long patch tip, it is smaller in the petals than the sepals. The column consists of three stamens and the style that have grown to a length of 1 to 2 mm at the base together. The free part of the filaments is flattened in cross section, it measures at the two lateral stamens 1 to 1.3 mm in length, the middle stamen 1 mm in length. The anthers are elongated, side 2 to 3 mm long, the average 2 to 3.5 mm long. The width is at all stamens 1 to 1.5 mm. The free part of the pen measures 5-6 mm in length and thus overhangs the stamens. The scar is round with a diameter of 0.5 mm, it is only slightly wider than the stylus having a diameter of 0.3 to 0.4 mm. The fruit is a thin-wall opening when ripe capsule, in cross-section approximately triangularly to the edges of the longitudinal strips, the spaces between them with a longitudinally extending groove. The seeds consist of a rounded central portion and two large appendages.

Occurrence

Neuwiedia griffithii growing in Sumatra and on the Malay Peninsula. The plants come from sea level before up to a height of about 150 m. The sites are in pristine and disturbed forests as well as in swamps and along water courses. Occurrence in Vietnam were reported by Averyanov, he assigns these plants in a recent publication, however, as Neuwiedia zollingeri var balansae one. Neuwiedia zollingeri var balansae in turn is seen as a synonym for Neuwiedia singapureana.

Systematics and botanical history

Neuwiedia griffithii described in 1874 by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach first time.
