New Edinburgh

New Edinburgh is a city suburb east of the city center in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

History

The district, located directly on the Rideau River, was in 1829 by Thomas McKay ( 1792-1855 ), a stonemason from Perth (Scotland ) founded. He forgave the name in honor of Edinburgh, the capital of his old home. The acquired country he quickly grew into an industrial area, were able to use in the mills, the water power of the Rideau River. 1866 New Edinburgh has been recognized as a village, but was incorporated in 1887 by Ottawa.

Today

Today, New Edinburgh is a quiet neighborhood, with a nature park along the eastern shore of the Rideau River. In the district, is spoken mainly in the English, are now some embassies and consulates, including those of France, India, Spain and South Africa. In New Edinburgh are Rideau Hall and 24 Sussex Drive, the official residences of the Governor General and the Prime Minister.
