New Guinean jumping mouse

The Guinea jerboa ( Lorentzimys nouhuysi ) is a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ).

General

Guinea - gerbils reach a body length 6-9 inches, added a 11 to 13 centimeters long tail. My weight is 10 to 23 grams. Their fur is reddish-brown to gray at the top, the underside is whitish- gray, the feet are whitish. When living in the lowland nominate L. n nouhuysi the coat is short, when living in the highland subspecies L. n alticola it is long, soft and dense. The head is short and wide, the feet are slim.

These rodents live in New Guinea, where they occur in forests throughout the island. They live at 2700 meters above sea level.

Guinea - jerboas are exclusive arboreal and keep preferably in forests with dense undergrowth. Place nests in the trees, more animals live in the nests together. In the trees they move continuously and jumping but less climbing. The food of these animals consists of insects, green parts of plants and fungi.

Guinea - jerboas are common and widespread, they are not on the IUCN endangered species.

System

According to Wilson & Reeder ( 2005), the New Guinea jerboa takes within the Altweltmäuse an isolated position and is therefore classified in a separate genus group of Lorentzimys group. After Lecompte et al. ( 2008), she is part of a predominantly living in New Guinea and Australia Radiation of Altweltmäuse, the Hydromyini.
