New National Party (South Africa)

The New National Party ( NNP short; Afrikaans: Nuwe Nasionale Party, English: New National Party ) was until 2005 a South African national conservative political party. It was founded as the successor of the National Party, which had withdrawn from the government of national unity (Government of National Unity ) with the African National Congress ( ANC) in 1997.

The name was changed this as an attempt to distance themselves from the apartheid past and as redefining as a moderate, non-racist party. The first chairman was the former President Frederik Willem de Klerk, who had received along with Nelson Mandela, the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the ending of apartheid. 2000 to October 2001, the NNP part of the Democratic Alliance. Last Marthinus van Schalkwyk of the party was out.

In the parliamentary elections in South Africa 2004, the NNP lost a majority of their votes and there were questions about the future of the party and the leadership Marthinus van Schalkwyks loud.

On 9 April 2005, the NNP declared their resolution. Eight of the nine members of the South African Parliament had declared the crossing ANC, the ninth lost his mandate.
