New River (Mexico–United States)

The New River (Spanish: Río Nuevo ) is a 125 kilometer long tributary of the Salto Lake in the Mexican state of Baja California and in the State of California. The river rises in Mexico and crossed at Mexicali / Calexico border with the United States. The average discharge at its confluence with the Salton Sea is 18 cubic meters per second.

The New River is the USA 's most polluted river. The contamination is mainly due to the disposal of waste from agriculture, chemistry and industry ( the U.S. share of 18.4 %, Mexico's share: 51.2 %), wastewater from Mexicali ( 29%) and other operating and production facilities in Mexico ( 1%). The continued pollution is increasingly a major threat to the ecological balance of the lake Salto dar.
