New River Tunnel

The Henry E. Kinney Tunnel ( formerly New River Tunnel ) is a road tunnel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the United States.

It was opened on 9 December 1960 and replaced so that the Federal Aid Highway Bridge, a opened on August 26, 1926 and 1958, decommissioned Bascule Bridge. In the tunnel passes under U.S. Highway 1 to the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The tunnel reached its lowest point 35 feet below sea level.

The construction of the tunnel was necessary because there was increasing congestion at the bascule bridge due to increasing road traffic over the decades. The waiting times were in the rush hour up to 45 minutes, which usually brought the traffic in the city center to a standstill.

The tunnel was established in 1986 named after Henry E. Kinney, who had during his time as head of the significantly supported the Miami Herald building.
