New Synagogue, Wrocław

Called The New Synagogue and the liberals or " main synagogue " was the synagogue of the liberal Jewish community of Breslau. She stood in Breslau on Anger No. 8. It was designed as the Hannover synagogue and the Königsberg Synagogue in the style of eclecticism and historicism according to models of Worms and the Aachen Cathedral. The construction followed the designs of Edwin Oppler. The synagogue was opened in 1872 and destroyed during the pogroms of November 1938.

Description

The building was designed for 2,000 worshipers. The domed central building adorned four polygonal, low corner towers. Above the main portal was to see a rosette. In contrast to the other synagogues the Breslau synagogue enjoyed the advantage of standing on a freely accessible site and to be able to be viewed from all sides.

The sacred building was designed by Edwin Oppler, an architect from oil which in 1865 to 1872. On September 29, 1872 Rosh Hashanah, was consecrated by Gedaliah Tiktin, an Orthodox rabbi, and Manuel Joel, a liberal rabbi. She was the second largest in the country after the New Synagogue of Berlin. The synagogue was destroyed during the pogrom of November 1938, with only remained the wrought iron fence of the synagogue grounds. In the synagogue site is now home to a memorial stone on which is to be read in Hebrew, Polish, and German:
