New York Golden Blades

The New York Raiders were an ice hockey team from 1972 to 1973 under this name, the start of the 1973/74 season as the New York Golden Blades and from mid-November 1973 to the end of the season as Jersey Knights in the North American World Hockey Association (WHA ) was active. The team moved to end of the season to the West Coast of the United States, where he played as San Diego Mariners on.

History

The WHA as an emerging league wanted, of course, be represented with a team in New York. As the site had Uniondale, passed a suburb on Long Iceland eye: There, a new hall was created with the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, in which up to then no hockey team was at home still, but only played the basketball team the New York Nets. But the operators of the hall were not thrilled to be home to a WHA team. Therefore strove William Shea, who in 1962 brought the baseball team the New York Mets in the neighboring stadium at Flushing Meadows to an NHL team. The NHL had expanded greatly in recent years and really wanted until 1974 to add new teams again, but to leave the WHA to the field is not without a fight, it was decided at a recent extension and so was with the New York Islanders, a team at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum installed.

The owner Neis Shayne remaining no other choice than to play in direct competition with the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The ticket sale was slow and you could only a quarter as many season tickets sell like the Islanders. Shayne therefore decided soon the team at Dick Wood and Sy Siegel to sell. The high rent for the Madison Square Garden and the low gate receipts brought the two quickly in financial difficulties. Sporting the team on offense with Ron Ward, who scored 51 goals and with Gene Peacosh, Bobby Sheehan and Wayne Rivers was occupied more than 30 times met each well. But the weak back line made the team the whipping boys of the league.

In May 1973, Ralf Brent bought the team and renamed it New York Golden Blades to. He took with Jerry DeLise a new Managing Director. Soon, the two discovered, however, which is why the previous owner wanted to leave the team necessarily. High rental costs for the Garden and low viewing figures were also the new owner 's undoing, so that the WHA disbanded the team and for the transitional period, a team in New Jersey installed until next season. There it played under the name Jersey Knights.
