Newbattle Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey in Scotland. The monastery is situated in the county of Midlothian near the village of Newbattle.

History

The Convent was founded in 1140 by the Scottish King David I and was a daughter foundation of Melrose Abbey, which in turn was a daughter house of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. The church was consecrated in 1234. The abbey was set up by Royal British troops in the years 1385 and 1544 fire. In 1587 it was converted into a secular manor of last Kommendatarabts Mark Kerr. In the basement of the mansion remains of the abbey buildings have been preserved.
