River Usk

The Newport Transporter Bridge ( Welsh: Pont Gludo Casnewydd ) is a transporter bridge over the River Usk in Newport, Wales. It is available as Grade -I monument is listed. It was built according to plans by the French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin 1902-1906 and opened on 12 September 1906. The design is an example of the very rare transporter bridges, of which there are only eight copies worldwide today.

Reasons for building a transporter bridge

This type of river crossing was chosen because the banks in the desired location are (about two kilometers south of the center of Newport ) is very low and an ordinary bridge would therefore achieved with very long access ramps the necessary headroom for the waterway. On the other hand, would be a ferry at low water not usable.

The towers are 74 meters high, the height of the horizontal supporting structure is 54 m above the ground. The gondola can transport six cars and 120 pedestrians and covers the distance of 197 m with 3 m / s. The drive is in a machine room above the eastern entrance. This transporter bridge is now the world's largest; she is the oldest of its kind in the UK.

Others

In 1985, the Transporter Bridge was closed because of wear. Following a £ 3 million expensive repair, it was reopened in 1995 and remained until the end of 2007. After re-opening in 2010 it remained only a few months in operation. Currently she is from April to September in operation.

The bridge is part of the classified road network ( road B4237 ). The Route 4 of the National Cycle Network crosses the River Usk here, and the route 47 starts on the west bank.

The bridge is generally considered the most important landmark of Newport. She stood in the center of the 2000- year celebrations, as fireworks were burned over their entire length, and was in various movies to see (for example, Tiger Bay) and television shows. Your use costs for pedestrians and all kinds of two-wheelers 50 pence for cars is the toll a pound. A day pass allows you to visit the power house and walk over the bridge girders.
