News of the World Championship

The News of the World Championship was a premium snooker tournament, which was played during the years 1950-1959. Compared to the snooker world championship, it was regarded as the more important tournament. This status it gained mainly through the participation of Joe Davis, who no longer participated in the World Cup since 1947.

History

The leading snooker tournaments in the post-war period, it was sponsored by the British Sunday newspaper News of the World and come with a cash prize of £ 1,500. The first and, until the dissolution in 1959, the permanent venue Leicester Square Hall was in London.

The tournament was played robin or round-robin tournament format in the so-called Round. All tournaments a handicap system was used, in which all participants received a 20 -point lead per frame on the outstanding player Joe Davis.
