Newstead Helmet

The Newstead Helmet is a Roman parade helmet with mask from the period of 80 to 100 AD, which was found 1905 in the Scottish Newstead in Roxburghshire. Together with the Ribchester helmet he is the type of class Ribchester helmet - Newstead.

Description

The Newstead helmet is one of the mask helmets. It consists of beaten iron, and in 1905 was found on the site of the former Roman fort at Newstead. The helmet bowl is made in the back of the head throughout with a curly hair style. The mask is worked separately and was fixed to the helmet with a leather strap. On the surface of the helmet, the remains of a silver or tin plating are visible. The neck guard of the helmet is also decorated and the name of the carrier is obtained by embarked letters.
