Neya (town)

Neja (Russian Нея ) is a small town with 9827 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in Russia in the Kostroma Oblast on the eponymous river. It is located 237 km northeast of the regional capital Kostroma. Nearest city is Makarjew, located only about 50 km away from Neja.

History

First settlements near present-day there were demonstrable at the beginning of the 16th century. For the hydronym a Finno- Ugric origin Neja from before the 9th century is suspected. Latest from the mid-16th century ran through the Neja - area a trade route, which favored around settlements.

Beginning of the 20th century, during the period of intensive railroad construction in the Russian Empire, the route Vologda - Vyatka was moved, which now belongs to a section of the European part of the Trans-Siberian Railway. It was built a small station in 1906 near the river Neja. The now convenient transport favored the trade in this area. Already in 1905, opened an English entrepreneur in the vicinity of the station, a wood factory. Over the next few decades, from the station settlement over 1000 inhabitants counting place.

1929 Rajon Neja was formed and declared the settlement Neja to its administrative center. In 1958 she received then the city status.

Economy and Transport

Neja is still a center for the forestry and wood processing with several sawmills. Otherwise, there are in the city only textile and food industry. While Neja has no direct highway connections with other cities, it is connected to the Trans-Siberian Railway, where it has a train station, the keep -distance trains.
