Van Dyk at Leuschner Observatory Supernova Search, a supernova in this galaxy, which received the designation SN 1994ae. This supernova was Type Ia and was one of the best observed supernovae. What makes these supernovae of type Ia is that they serve as so-called standard candles to determine the expansion of our universe.
