NI Railways

The Northern Ireland Railways ( NIR) are a state-owned railway company operating in and between Derry, Belfast, Bangor and Dublin offering in Northern Ireland under the umbrella of public company Translink rail links ( in the Republic of Ireland).

The result, the company is 1968 from the Ulster Transport Authority. It has a rail network of 350 kilometers in length and carried in the financial year 2000/2001, 5.9 million passengers. The Northern Ireland Railways employ 700 people. Since the railway network in Ireland is expanded only thin, the bus is much more widespread. In Northern Ireland it is also operated by TransLink under the name Ulsterbus and Goldline ( for intercity and cross-border connections).

NIR has almost exclusively by diesel railcars. Only for the operational use, there are three diesel locomotives. The network is not electrified. Together with the railway company of the Republic of Ireland Iarnród Éireann operates NIR under the brand name "Enterprise " is a direct train service between Dublin and Belfast. Again, the railway companies compete but with a number of cheaper and usually faster bus services.
