Niccolò Castiglioni

Niccolò Castiglioni ( born July 17, 1932 in Milan, † September 7, 1996 ) was an Italian composer.

Life

Castiglioni studied piano and composition at the Conservatorio " Giuseppe Verdi" with Giorgio Federico Ghedini and Franco Margola and graduated in 1953. He was awarded for the best thesis in Composition, winning one financed by the Ministero della Public Education trip to the Salzburg Festival. his interest in this time especially the arts, nature, the mountains and philosophy, particularly the writings of Eugenio Garin on the medieval Platonism. Having enthusiastically during his studies, especially for the music of Igor Stravinsky, he worked later with the twelve-tone and then with the different positions of musical thinking by Anton von Webern. at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, he attended courses by Friedrich Gulda, Carlo Zecchi and Boris Blacher. Between 1958 and 1965 he attended the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt.

Aside from a brief period in the 1950s, in which he also appeared as a pianist, stood for Castiglioni composing and teaching at the center of his work. From 1966 to 1970 he lived in the U.S., where he taught at the Rockefeller Foundation in Buffalo counterpoint and as a visiting professor at the Universities of Washington (Seattle ), Michigan ( Ann Arbor ) and California (San Diego ) composition taught. After his return to Italy, he first taught at the Conservatorio di Trento ( Trento ) and from 1977 until his death at the Conservatorio di Milano.
