Nicholas Georgiadis

Nicholas Georgiadis ( born September 14, 1923 in Athens, † March 10, 2001 in London ) was a Greek- British painter, stage and costume designer, known for his work for ballet, particularly in collaboration with Kenneth MacMillan, is.

Life and work

Nicholas Georgiadis studied architecture at the National Technical University of Athens and graduated in 1946. He then received a Fulbright post-graduate fellowship at Columbia University, New York City in 1952. The following year he came to London to painting to study and stage design at the Slade School of Art.

1955 won a first prize for stage design, leading to his discovery by Ninette de Valois and for an order for a design for the Sadler's Wells Theatre in London led. This marked the beginning of a professional partnership between Georgiadis and Kenneth MacMillan for almost four decades.

From 1956 until his death in 2001 Georgiadis worked for some of the most famous productions in ballet, opera and theater. For MacMillan he designed a large number of ballets, including Noctambules (1956 ), Romeo and Juliet (1965 ), Manon (1974 ) Mayerling (1978), Orpheus (1982) and The Prince of the Pagodas (1989). Many of these productions are still listed up to the present day at the Royal Opera House in London and internationally.

He also worked closely with Rudolf Nureyev together for his performances as Sleeping Beauty (1966 ), The Nutcracker ( 1968), The Tempest (1982) and Washington Square (1985).

Outside of his work in the theater, he was an internationally known artist, with exhibitions in Kassel, Venice and London. He also had a passion for cinema and worked on a number of film projects, the most famous of which is The Trojan Women (1971 ) with Katharine Hepburn, Vanessa Redgrave and Irene Papas. In 1964, his works at the documenta in Kassel III were shown in the painting department. He received the Order of the British Empire for his contribution to the arts in 1984. Nicholas Georgiadis worked until his death in 2001.
