Nicholas of Lyra

Nicholas of Lyra (c. 1270/75 in Lyra ( Lyre ) at Evreux in Normandy, † 1349 in Paris), Doctor planus et utilis, biblical theologian of the Middle Ages.

Nicholas was in 1291 Franciscans, then a student and later a Master of Theology in Paris ( 1308-19 and again since 1326). In 1319 he was Provincial of the Order in 1326 by France and Burgundy. He died on October 23, 1349 in the Franciscan convent in Paris.

Because of its Hebrew and rabbinical knowledge, it was believed he was of Jewish origin. His running commentary on the Bible Postillae perpetuae (between 1322 and 1330; ersch Rome in 1471, 5 vols, and often ), it has, more than would otherwise been the case in the Middle Ages, except in the literal sense and also goes specifically to Jewish - exegetical traditions ( Rashi ) a.
