Nicholas the Small

Nicholas of Münsterberg (also: Nicholas the Small; Polish: Mikołaj Maly Ziębicki, * 1322-1327; † April 23, 1358 in Hungary) was 1341-1358 Duke of Münsterberg.

Life

Nicholas came from the Silesian branch of the Piast dynasty. His parents were Duke Bolko II of Münsterberg and Jutta († 1342 ), widow of the Trenčín Duke Matthew IV

After the death of his father Bolko II 1341 Nicholas took over the government of the Duchy of Münsterberg. Since his father on August 29, 1336 with the Treaty of Straubing the 1335 agreement concluded Trenčín recognized and Münsterberg by a Bohemian hereditary fief was, Nicholas did homage on August 24, 1341 in Prague the Czech king John of Luxembourg and his son, Margrave Karl IV on August 14, 1343 Nicholas sold the city to Zobten Bolko II of Schweidnitz. Since Nicholas from his father tremendous debt took over, and the Duchy had lost through pledges and purchases large tracts of land to Nicholas had to commit on October 14, 1343 the Czech king house opposite, his duchy Münsterberg never to sell or pledge. On the way back he died on April 23, 1358 in Hungary. His body was transferred to Münsterberg and then buried in the family vault of the monastery Heinrichau.
