Nicolae Crețulescu

Nicolae Cretulescu, last name also Kretzulescu, ( born March 1, 1812 in Bucharest, † July 26, 1900 in Leurdeni, Arges county ) was a Romanian physician, diplomat and politician; as such he was, among other Romanian Prime Minister.

Life

Cretulescu comes from an old boyar family. He was the son of Alexandru Cretulescu and accre Campineanu and studied medicine in France at the University of Nantes. After receiving his doctorate in medicine and surgery, he returned to Romania. He then practiced at a hospital in Bucharest. In 1857 Cretulescu founded the Scientific Medical Society ( Societatea Medicală Ştiinţifică ).

The following known his political career. Cretulescu was on June 24, 1862 to October 11, 1863 and on June 14, 1865 to February 11, 1866 Prime Minister of Romania. In addition, he was a senator, President of the Senate, President of the Council of Minister, Interior Minister, Minister of Justice, Minister of Finance, Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Labour and Minister of Education. On September 9, 1871 Cretulescu became a member of the Romanian Academy. Between 1872 and 1873, respectively in 1895 and 1898, he was its president. In the meantime, in 1873, he was diplomatic representative in Berlin and in Rome, Paris and St. Petersburg.

Nicolae Cretulescu died at the age of 88 years.
