Nicolae Iorga

Nicolae Iorga (also Nicolae Jorga; born January 17, 1871 in Botosani, † November 27, 1940 in Ploieşti ) was a Romanian historian, writer and politician.

Life

After completing his studies in Paris, Berlin and Leipzig, he received his doctorate in 1893 and at the age of 23 years, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy. In the 1900s he became the chief representative of Sämänätorismus. In 1910 he founded together with the theoretician of Romanian anti-Semitism, Alexandru Constantin Cuza, the National Democratic Party ( Partidul National Democrat ). In 1920 he joined the Nationalist People's Party ( Partidul nationalist al Poporului ) by Constantin Argetoianu and became its president. From April 18 1931 to May 31, 1932, he was Romanian Prime Minister. After intra-party differences, he founded his 1932 Nationalist Democratic Party ( Nationalist Partidul Democrat ). As prominent personality of the Romanian culture Iorga also enjoyed the confidence of the royal house. As a member of a circle of educators, scientists and the military, he supported the Scout Movement in Romania. Nicolae Iorga was published for that time the largest Romanian publisher with about 1250 volumes and 25,000 articles.

Death

After journalistic attacks on the extreme right-wing Legion of the Archangel Michael (also known as Iron Guard ), he was assassinated on November 27, 1940 by legionaries.
