Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy

Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy (* January 10, 1588, † 1653/1656 ) was a Dutch painter of Flemish origin. Pickenoy was possibly a pupil of Cornelis van der Voort, and Bartholomeus van der Heist was a student Pickenoys.

Life

He was a son of Elias Claeszoon Pickenoy (1565-1640) and Heijltje s'Jonge Laurens (1562-1638), who emigrated before his birth from Antwerp to Amsterdam. 1621, when he lived near the Oude Kerk, he married Levijntje Bouwens ( 1599 - ca 1656), a 21 -year-old orphan. They had ten children, two of whom, Sarah, and Elias, died young.

Pickenoy painted large Schuttersstukken, group portraits, the manager of the orphanage, and individual portraits of local and national celebrities like Nicolaes Tulp, Cornelis de Graeff, Maarten Tromp and Jochem Harpertszoon Hendrickszoon Swartenhont, husband of Elisabeth Bas. The earliest image that Pickenoy is attributed, is " Dr. de Vrij 's Osteological Sebastiaen Egbertz presentation " of 1619, it is now in the Amsterdam Historical Museum. The highlight of his career was the period from 1630 to 1637, a period that was characterized by a high artistic level and numerous orders of prominent patrons. Another great painting from the collection of the Amsterdam Historical Museum is The Luncheon of the shooters from the company of Captain Jacob Backer and Lieutenant Jacob Rogh from the period 16321-1634.

After 1637 he painted very little, except for a few prestigious and lucrative group portraits. Apart from portraits he painted also a smaller number of Biblical stories, which can be viewed at the Museum Catharijneconvent. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Historical Museum has many of his best works. In 1637 he bought from Adriaen Pauw the house at the corner of Sint Anthoniessluis and Jodenbreestraat, an area in which many painters, art dealers and jewelers were established. The house had previously alleged his teacher, Cornelis van der Voort heard, and later it was Hendrick van Uylenburgh heard. The latter worked 1631-1634 with Rembrandt van Rijn together. 1639 Rembrandt bought the house next door Pickenoys, now the Rembrandt House Museum. How Rembrandt could also Pickenoy not pay the loan for his house and had to sell the house again after eight years.

The works Pickenoys can not be easily distinguished from many of his contemporaries. Characteristic of Pickenoys style are the sharp light ideas which make the heads stand out sharply, the somewhat exaggerated gestures, the large, green-brown shade and the unusually shaped eyes.
