Nicolas Charles Seringe

Nicolas Charles Seringe ( born December 3, 1776 in Longjumeau, † December 29, 1858 in Lyon) was a French botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Ser. ".

Life and work

Seringe studied medicine in Paris, but was withdrawn shortly before his promotion in the Republican army and served as a surgeon. With the army Jean -Victor Moreau, he moved to Germany. After the war he settled in Bern.

Seringe specialized in botany and began to teach at the University of Bern. In 1830 he became director of the botanical garden in Lyon and in 1834 professor at the local university.

He was particularly interested in agriculture and horticulture. In 1855 he was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour. Three years later, 1858, he died in poverty.
