Nicolas Clément

Nicolas Clément ( born January 12, 1779 Dijon, † November 21, 1841 in Paris) or Nicolas Clément- Desormes (from 1820) was a French chemist and physicist.

Life and work

Nicolas Clément was one of the discoverers of the element iodine (where he worked with Charles Bernard Desormes ). He succeeded in 1806, the first chemical analysis of the main component of lapis lazuli. He developed in 1819 a method for determining the specific heat capacity of gases ( with Desormes ).

The method for calculating the speed of sound in gases by the coefficient named after him, also goes back to him; together with Desormes 1826 he described the aerodynamic paradox.

He worked closely with Desormes together, founded in 1804 with this a chemical factory and was his son in law.
