The Niedensteiner head hawk in the woods Bergland is a 475 m above sea level. NN high basalt knoll north of Niedenstein in northern Hesse Schwalm- Eder-Kreis.

While there was a castle on the mountain in the Middle Ages, the Hesse tower and a traveling restaurant are there today popular destinations.

Geography

Location

The Niedensteiner head lies on the southern edge of the woods hawk mountain country and is the southeasternmost of the rear hawk forest knolls. In the nature park forest hawk he rises as West foothills of the Langeberg Mountains between the Niedensteiner core city directly west and the Niedensteiner Ermetheis district in the southeast. West past particularly overgrown with spruce mountain flows the EMS inflow Wiehoff.

Castle story

On the mountain was a castle, whose history until today is largely unknown in the Middle Ages. The first mention is, as Conrad of Elves held the castle for the Duchess Sophie of Brabant and their son Henry against the people of Mainz Archbishop Gerhard von Dhaun from 1254. Conrad of elves founded after Sophie's behalf on the western slope of the castle hill, on his own territory belonging to the Urgemarkung Wich Village, the new, already in 1259, known as city development " Nydensteyne ". The plant was then apparently occupied in the possession of Count Henry I of Hesse and his successors, and was with Burgmannen and ministry officials from the surrounding local nobility. Remains uncertain the date of their destruction, but probably the castle was soon abandoned after it had been in 1385 or 1387 destroyed by troops of the Mainz archbishop Adolf I of Nassau. The engraver William Dilich designated 1608 the castle as " long since ruined castle ". Today, no remains of the castle are no longer detectable.

Hesse Tower

1929 suggested the Niedensteiner teacher and chairman of the Mountain Association Niedenstein Wilhelm Hecker, the construction of the observation tower Hesse tower on the summit plateau of jagged Niedensteiner head. Through collections among the club members and grants from public authorities was started in April 1931 with the construction. On June 21, 1931, the wooden tower was inaugurated.

For a long time the tower was only accessible on foot. Since opening a small restaurant at the base of the tower hiking however, it is possible to arrive by car there directly. Operators of tower and restaurant, which is open from Easter to end of October on Sundays and public holidays, the Hessian- Waldeckische mountain and Folk Society Niedenstein.

From the tower, the eye is in the Chattengau, for example down to Ermetheis, Niedenstein and weighting village and across to Elmshagen.

Hiking and winter sports

About the Niedensteiner head the extra tour takes H5 of the Hawk Forest sidewalk north runs over the Eder by sea. In the winter a ski lift of the ski clubs Ermetheis is situated in good snow conditions on the northeast slope.
