Nielsen Holdings

The Nielsen Company, formerly VNU ( Verenigde Nederlandse Uitgeverijen ) NV, is an information and media company with headquarters in the Netherlands and is considered a leader in marketing and media information, industry directories, and consumer and educational information. The Nielsen Company has offices in more than 100 countries and employs approximately 38,000 people worldwide. Annual turnover 2007: 4.707 billion U.S. dollars ( 3.416 billion euros ).

The company was founded in 1964 by the merger of two Dutch publishing companies. The original name Verenigde Nederlandse Uitgeversbedrijven ( German: United Dutch Publishers ), is no longer used since 1999. Since 2006, the company is the holding company Hellman & Friedman belongs. 2007 renamed the company into The Nielsen Company.

Since 2001, ACNielsen is part of the company, to which also Nielsen EDI counts. Since 23 August 2006, David L. Calhoun CEO of the company. Calhoun succeeds Rob Ruijter (CFO of VNU ), who had since June 2006 acting as interim CEO.

Activities in Germany

From 1975 - 1979 the VNU was a 50% stake in the Caucasus Verlag GmbH, Munich, who published the Fix and Foxi comics at that time. The remaining 50 % belonged to the British company IPC. In Germany, the former VNU Business Publications Germany GmbH, Munich issued monthly three IT magazines, but they were set to issue 6/2007. The collecting society Volnay GmbH was closed June 30, 2007, because no buyer had been found.

The former VNU ran the portal testticker.de and a number of blogs.

On 2 July 2007 informed the corporation NetMediaEurope newly founded, that it has acquired the sites of vnunet in France, Germany, Spain and Italy from 3i and the continuation of the sites vnunet, Silicon.fr, The Inquirer and Gizmodo ( license from Gawker ) plans. This company is owned by the previous management of vnunet ( Dominique Busso, Laure Chaussin, Pierre Mangin ) and the VC firm Truffle Capital.
