Nivoldhagensage

Three pastors, one from Behnsdorf, one from Hödingen and one from Eschenrode, kept watch at the little oaks swine, as the acorn was good and the fields and pastures were grazed. Suddenly she saw in the wallow flash something that had burrowed out the pigs. On closer inspection, they realized this shimmering little as a bell. They knew that this could only have come from the desert place Niewoldthagen. Now, the question arose as to what should be with her. All three shepherds had found them, none of them had a privilege. They decided to go to their homes and bring a vehicle to transport the bell. Those who arrive first with a team at the site should be able to bring the bell to his home village. The bell was now put by Eschenrode because the Eschenröder shepherd already on the way met a team that returns immediately drove him to recover the bell. Now the fifteen hundredweight bronze bell hangs from 1511 in Eschenröder steeple and always shouts, " Never - wold, Never - wold ... "

This legend is mentioned among others in Eschenröder Heimatlied.

Today, the bell still hangs in the church tower of Eschenrode and heard daily at 18:00 clock for a few minutes.
