Nigerien parliamentary election, 2011

The parliamentary elections in Niger in 2011 took place on 31 January 2011, by-elections on May 15, 2011. Were elected 113 deputies to the National Assembly of Niger.

Background

Mamadou Tandja President ( MNSD - Nassara ) was issued on 18 February 2010 by a military coup. The new military junta, the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy headed by Salou Djibo, suspended the constitution and dissolved the National Assembly. The junta promised a swift return to democracy. It was elaborated a transitional parliament, the National Konsulativrat, set up and a new constitution, which was adopted in the referendum on October 31, 2010.

The parliamentary elections were held on the same day as the presidential election. The independent national electoral commission set the election date first on January 3, 2011 and, moving him according to internal organizational and financial problems on 31 January 2011. Several submitted for parliamentary elections candidate lists were rejected, for organizational reasons and because of changed conditions the passive right to vote: at least three quarters of the candidates on a list now had to have a higher education. Ultimately, 74 were approved by 141 submitted lists. Certain parties requested a further postponement of the elections in vain. At a meeting of the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy with representatives of the major parties on January 24, 2011 it was decided to hold on 31 January 2011 as the election date in order not to jeopardize the timetable for the handover of power from the military to democratically elected institutions.

From 6,740,493 3,317,935 registered voters went to the polls. This corresponds to a turnout of 49.22 %. 3,230,498 ballots counted as valid ballots and 87 437 as empty or invalid. Election day proceeded without major incidents. The EU and ECOWAS sent election observers. The EU declared the elections transparent and generally performs well. This view concurred with ECOWAS.

The transition Constitutional Court published the results of the parliamentary elections on 16 March 2011 and ordered a repeat of the elections in the region of Agadez, where six seats were assigned to. These elections were held on 15 May 2011, and brought in seats following result: PNDS - Tarayya 3, FASHIONS -FA Lumana Africa 2 and MNSD - Nassara 1

Mahamadou Issoufou ( PNDS - Tarayya ) won 21 March 2011 the ballot in the presidential election. He made 8 April 2011 his oath of office. The Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy was as announced from his power to the democratically elected institutions. On 19 April 2011, the former Prime Minister Hama Amadou ( FASHIONS -FA Lumana Africa) was elected President of the National Assembly. On April 21, 2011 appointed President Issoufou the new government with Brigi Rafini ( PNDS - Tarayya ) as Prime Minister.
