Niigata (Japanese新泻 市, -shi) is a city and the administrative center of the prefecture Niigata on Honshu, the main island of Japan. Niigata is located at the mouth of the Shinano River and is one of the largest port cities along the coast to the Sea of ​​Japan.

Niigata has 809 708 inhabitants and is located 300 km north of Tōkyō.

The region is an oil and natural gas production area, so there are also oil refineries. In addition, the paper and food industries as well as mechanical engineering and shipbuilding playing an important economic role.

History

After a long history as a port city of Niigata became a free port after the Meiji Restoration. The city government was established in 1889.

Niigata was in 1945 next to Kokura and of course Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb on the list of possible targets, but remained spared.
