The University of Niigata (Japanese新泻 大学, Niigata daigaku, in short: Shindai (新 大) ) is a state university in Japan. The main campus ( Ikarashi Campus ) is located in Nishi- ku, Niigata in Niigata Prefecture.

History

The oldest university was the origin of the Kyōritsu Hospital (共 立 病院), which was founded in 1870. It was 1876 Niigata prefectural hospital and sat in 1879 the medical school with him. Although the school was closed in 1888, took the hospital as an urban hospital. In 1910, the Medical State Technical College Niigata (新泻 医学 専 门 学校, Niigata Igaku Semmon Gakko ) newly established in today's Asahimachi campus and the city hospital was her clinic. In 1922 she became the Medical University of Niigata (新泻 医科大学, Niigata ika daigaku ).

The development of the Medical School to the state ( Imperial ) University wanted the prefectural and municipal governments and citizens ( as Kanazawa ); it was not realized before the Pacific War.

In 1949 the University of Niigata was established through the merger of Medical University of Niigata and six schools. The six were:

  • High school Niigata (新泻 高等学校, Niigata Kōtō Gakko, founded in 1919 ),
  • The First Normal School Niigata (新泻 第一 师范学校, Niigata dai -ichi shihan Gakko, founded in 1874 ),
  • The Second Normal School Niigata (新泻 第二 师范学校, Niigata dai -ni shihan Gakko in Joetsu, founded in 1899 ),
  • Youth Normal School Niigata (新泻 青年 师范学校, Niigata his shihan Gakko in Shibata, founded in 1922 ),
  • The pilot Nagaoka (长 冈 工业 専 门 学校, Nagaoka Kōgyō Semmon Gakko in Nagaoka, founded in 1923 ), and
  • The prefectural agricultural and forestry business school Niigata (新泻 県 立 农林 専 门 学校, Niigata kenritsu Norin Gakko Semmon in Goshen, founded in 1945 ).

First, the university had eight locations. 1968 Ikarashi campus was reopened and the faculties ( except medicine and dentistry) moved to the campus in a few years. The cities of Nagaoka and Joetsu lost the faculties of the University; instead of her but they got the new public universities: the University of Technology Nagaoka (长 冈 技术 科学 大学, founded in 1976 ) and the University of Education, Joetsu (上 越 教育 大学, founded in 1978 ).
